This well patinaed & provenanced Civil War forage cap was sold by late enlisted CW cloth collector Jim Stamatelos in 1988 & his original letter accompanies this lot w/ his comments, “the brasses have taken on a nice patina. The insignia appears to have been there in place for 100 years. The nap on the cloth has worn thin from age and use, the color of the cloth has faded from the sun except in the protected areas… The few stitched repairs appear to be very old and contemporary to the use of the hat. The staining from sweat in the interior on the sweat band and along the bottom edge all attest to the hat being well worn over a period of time…" Accompanying cap is a very good condition enlisted US belt & buckle w/ leather artillery fuse box attached. CONDITION: good overall w/ old repairs & loss of the nap as noted. Lining & sweat band are sound. Original chinstrap is intact but dry & fragile. Belt & pouch are sound & very good overall. (02-14833/JS). $4,000-5,000.
