EXCAVATED EXAMPLE. This lot consists of 11 Hardee hat eagles, as worn on the side of the well-known Civil War era Hardee hat. This insignia did exist before the adoption of the Hardee hat and can often be seen on enlisted US M1851 and 1854 headgear. It is most famous, however, for holding up the brim on the side of the Hardee hat. CONDITION: excavated examples vary widely in condition from very good to very poor. Please see photographs for a more accurate rendition of condition. The non-excavated example has good detail with about 50% of its original gilding and two pins on the reverse. (02-22825/BF). $800-1,200.
