This very interesting and attractive banner measures approx. 36" x 72" and is swallowtail in form. It likely dates from as early as the centennial period to possibly as late as the Spanish American War. The banner has a 2 1/4" white cotton hoist with an open sleeve to facilitate hanging from a pole. At each end of the hoist is a cut hole to facilitate tie suspension. There is no evidence of grommets, either brass or sewn. The wool bunting blue field extends about 17 1/2" down from the top and features 13 cross-sewn white cotton stars on each side. There are five red vertical cotton stripes and four white vertical cotton stripes ending in a swallowtail form. CONDITION: The banner is in very solid condition with minimal small tears or holes. The colors are a bit faded, and the white cotton is a bit yellowed. The tips of the swallowtail are somewhat tattered, but the banner displays beautifully. (02-23766/BF). $500-800.
