DEPARTMENT AND THE TREASURY DEPARTMENT. These 14 letters vary in size from approximately 5" x 7" to 10 1/2" x 8". The printed headings at the top read "THE ASSISTANT SECRETARY OF THE NAVY WASHINGTON", "DEPARTMENT OF THE NAVY WASHINGTON", "THE SECRETARY OF THE NAVY WASHINGTON", "NAVY DEPARTMENT", TREASURY DEPARTMENT", and "THE SECRETARY OF THE TREASURY". The letters are dated from 1905 to 1931, and most appear to have been written to F.W. Hartford of Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The letters address a variety of subjects, but many seem to be related, in some way, to the operation of the Navy yard at Portsmouth. Autographs include Winthrop, MacVeagh, Bailey, Harks, Woodbury, Jahncke, Wilbur, and several more. Most notable among the signatures is that of Theodore Roosevelt Jr. CONDITION: the letters are partially glued to backing papers at the very top of the sheets and show very light wear with nearly no discoloration. The typed sections are very clear, and the signatures remain strong. (02-21850-6/BF). $200-300.
