Descended from the Fred Sladen Family. This high quality ring features a beautiful square cushion faceted emerald center stone measuring approximately 7.0 x 6.20 x 5.03mm. The weight of emerald is 1.30ct (calculated). Clarity III, SII. Color is VslvB, 6/4–medium dark moderately strong slightly bluish green. Proportions are good, finish is fair, brilliancy is 50-70%. On either side of the emerald is a single diamond. One being an old European cut diamond measuring 6.63 x 6.68 x 4.44mm weighing 1.32ct (calculated) with SI-I clarity and H color. The other diamond is a round brilliant cut diamond measuring approximately 6.62 x 6.74 x 4.40mm with a carat weight of 1.20ct having SI-I clarity and H color. The cut for both diamonds are good, the finish is also good. Culets are large. The total weight of the ring is 4.60 grams. Ring has a horse U guard. Accompanying the ring is an old ring box and a recent appraisal by a GIA graduate gemologist estimating the value of the ring at $16,100.
The ring is also accompanied by a receipt of transfer which reads "Manila, Philippine Islands, Apr. 21, 1900. I certify that I this day delivered to Archbishop Nozaleda one emerald and diamond ring forwarded for delivery to the care of Major General Otis by Capt. S. B. Bootes, A.C.S., U.S. Vols. Signed Fred Sladen, Captain 14th Infantry, A.D.C. Witness to delivery: F. G. Fisher, Interpreter". The ring descended in the family of Fred W. Sladen, Governor of the Philippines just prior to his assignment to West Point. The ring was for Sladen's wife. The Sladen Family represents 3 generations of American heroes from the Civil War to current day. His father Joseph Sladen (1841-1911) began his military career in the Civil War receiving the Congressional
Medal of Honor for his actions. His son, Fred, graduated from West Point and had a very long military career himself winning every award possible except the Medal of Honor in WWI.
