A wonderful, authentic Revolutionary War era horn engraved w/ 2 schooners, 1 of which appears to be under full sail. The horn bears the words "ISAAC BARNS HIS HORN MADE AT SANT JOHNS NVEMBER THE 5, 1775" w/ the initials, “AW” near the spout. Horn measures 11 1/4" overall & has an early square nail in the center of the end cap. The spout is well turned & properly tapered. Sant Johns likely refers to the Battle of Ft. St. Johns (Jean) which took place in Quebec during 1775. General Philip Schuyler led a force of 1,000 men from Fort Ticonderoga & laid siege to St. John in Quebec. The siege ended on November 2nd. This horn is dated November 5th & was likely done in Barns' spare time after the siege ended. CONDITION: unquestionably original engraving. Horn shows light wear overall w/ a sm. hole near the butt cap. (02-15682/BF). $600-900.
