MUSKET WITH PRESENTATION PLAQUE TO E. D. FRENCH WITH BAYONET. Cal. 69. NSN. Usual configuration with three spring retained bands attaching 42" barrel. Rear two bands have retaining springs in front toward muzzle. Breech end of barrel is stamped "US" and with "P" eagle head and "V" proofs. Lock with flat chamfered plate having semi pointed tail is fitted with round bodied reinforced cock, integral pan, bridled frizzen with straight toe and feather spring with bulbous finial. Lock is marked "US" eagle "SPRINGFIELD" in arch in front of cock and "1816" on tail. American walnut stock has later style comb with dished cheek rest on left side and later style iron furniture. Buttplate is dated 1816. Inspector's marks "JCS" & "J" in an oval are behind trigger guard tang and "EJ" in an oval are on side opposite lock. A German silver rectangle is inlet at top of grip which is engraved "Capt. E. D. French" "1816" "Musket". Sling loops are fitted and correct style button head ramrod is present. A brass collection tag marked "2M6" is affixed to sling loop. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: rifle also comes with correct style socket bayonet with 14" triangular blade marked "JI" which fits musket quite well. CONDITION: fine. Metal parts exhibit even brown patina with some cleaned highlights at rear of barrel and on lockplate. Stock retains most of its original finish with good hand wear; markings are good. Bore is mostly shiny with some scattered pits. Mechanically good. Barrel tang shows deformity from attempted removal. Cock appears to be a later replacement as color does not match lockplate. Finish of bayonet matches musket well. (01-22773/MGM). ANTIQUE. $3,000-4,000.
