Horn measures approx. 12" in length. A scarce & extremely desirable Tansel style carved horn w/ the initials “WM*MR” & the date “1826” engraved on the side. After migrating from Virginia, Francis Tansel began carving horns in Kentucky as early as 1790. Tansel horns are known to have also been carved in Ohio & Indiana, primarily by the sons of Francis who were named John, Stark & Timothy. Other carvings on the horn include a wonderful folky American eagle grasping a branch bearing heart shaped leaves. There is also a medallion w/ what appears to be a mountain lion engraved inside the circle. The lg. wooden plug has a forged iron staple in the end. This early horn is done in the style of Tansel but may not have been carved by Francis or one of his sons. CONDITION: there is chipping & some minor losses at the edge of the plug. There appears to be fire damage extending 6" up from the tip on 1 side of the horn. There is cracking & minor losses as a result of the fire damage. Despite the damage, the engravings remain quite clear & their quaintness is easily enjoyed. (02-15505/BF). $300-500.
