OF THE TOMPKINS BLUES OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK. Overall length: 36 1/2". Blade length: 31". Blade has a single narrow central fuller & is etched over 2/3 of its length with various foliate, military & patriotic motifs including an eagle with "E PLURIBUS UNUM" banner, a field of 15 stars, federal shield & flag & Lady Liberty. Steel hilt with turned guard featuring acorn finials & scallop shell languets. Pistol grip pommel with incised diagonal lines. Decorated back strap with carved bone grip. Steel scabbard is engraved with a plethora of foliate motifs & a lg. panel that reads, "Presented to CAPTAIN SAMUEL W. SEELY OF THE TOMPKINS BLUES by his fellow citizens as a token of esteem for his Military discipline New York Nov..20th.. 1833". CONDITION: blade has a cleaned gray finish with easily viewed etching. Hilt has no oxidation but is a bit loose. There is sm. 1" section of backstrap missing above the ferrule. Scabbard has a dark finish but is free from oxidation. Engraving shows wear but is quite legible. (02-19516/BF). $1,200-1,800.
