Original excavated 1 3/4" stamped brass “1838, SERVANT, No. 1679”. Charleston was the only city to make such badges. Any slave working in Charleston had to have the current badge showing taxes paid or be susceptible to arrest & find. CONDITION: badge has fold on left side that has been repaired, numerous sm. dings & dents giving almost stipples appearance. Stamped cartouche are discernable through “SE in servant not discernable”.
