MUSKET. Cal. 69. NSN. Federal armory alteration of Springfield flintlock to percussion via "Belgium system" of plugging barrel vent and threading nipple directly into barrel. The original lock plate had percussion hammer fitted with removal of flintlock components. This is an honest complete example of one of over 300,000 conversions made prior to the Civil War of which many were issued to volunteers in 1861. 42" round barrel has VP Eaglehead proofs on left side of breech, "1842" on tang. Soldier initials cut in butt stock. Lock has small eagle above "US" forward of hammer and "SPRING / FIELD / 1841" stamped vertically at tail. CONDITION: very good overall, complete and matching sling swivels and ramrod, good markings, stock is sound and well fit, two discernible inspection cartouche. Mechanically fine with clear smooth bore. PROVENANCE: from the PMRB Collection. (01-28438/JS). ANTIQUE. $500-800.
