GUN. Cal. 79. NSN. Bbl. 39" rnd. has Birmingham proofs on very heavy breech section behind single standing leaf rear sight. Lg. size lock w/ flat plate is stamped w/ crowned “VR” initials. “TOWER” “1845” is at center. Robust stock of figured European walnut extends to w/ in 4" of muzzle w/ brass cap & is held to bbl. by 3 side bolts. Triggerguard & buttplate are brass & unmarked. Steel ramrod is held by 3 beaded pipes & no thimble. CONDITION: very good. Iron parts w/ old cleaning are now mostly heavy brown patina w/ silver highlights. Stocks retain most of what appears to be original oil finish w/ many nicks, dents & scratches. Brass w/ evidence of old cleaning is attractively toned. Bore is fairly smooth & relatively shiny w/ some scattered pits. Lock is fine. These guns were designed to take a heavy charge & used in defensive positions but could also serve well in the hands of an infantryman on foot. (01-19468/MGM). ANTIQUE. $1,000-1,500.
