FOR SABER BAYONET.Cal. 54. NSN. Standard configuration of model 1841 brass mounted two band rifle, "HARPERS FERRY 1846" marked lock with eagle & "US". 33" barrel pitted around breech with no markings visible, original front blade sight, and notch rear sight. 1846 is first date of production and only 600 delivered for Mexican War. Likely Confederate armory modified for Civil War for saber bayonet with added lug (which has been removed). By shortening forestock, and cutting back front band. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: letter from Bill Gary describing rifle as 2nd Texas Mounted Rifles during Mexican War. CONDITION: good to very good overall, complete and original as configured, mechanics fine, bore has been reamed out to 56 caliber smoothbore. PROVENANCE: David Berenson estate collection 2012.
