MUSKET. Cal. 58. NSN. This is an honest example of a complete & original 1855 rifle musket w/ all of the updated changes which included iron implement box (patchbox), iron nosecap. This gun conforms to other 1860 manufactured examples being 56" overall, 40" bbl. w/ "VP" over eagle head proofs & "1860" date. The lock w/ Maynard tape primer assembly is marked "U.S. / SPRINGFIELD" forward of primer door & dated "1860" at tail. CONDITION: good overall, appears original, matching & complete. Metal has been cleaned & has a gray bright patina w/ staining & light pitting. Stock is sound, edges are worn. One cartouche is visible in outline only. Other markings are discernible, though bbl. date is weak. There are additional unidentified rack markings on top of buttplate. Mechanically fine, including Maynard priming system w/ well defined, bright rifled bore. (01-17449/JS). ANTIQUE. $2,000-3,000.
