CUTTOE. Overall length: 27". Blade length: 21 3/4". Blade has a single, rudimentary fuller near the spine. It is etched on both sides with allegorical motifs and the words "Pro Deo et Patria." There is also one game animal etched on each side of the blade. Heavily gilded gargoyle hilt in the rococo style. At one time, the sword had a downturned clamshell guard that has been removed, possibly during its useful life. Classical rococo designs are utilized throughout the hilt and blend well with the austere gargoyle pommel. No scabbard. CONDITION: blade has a medium gray patina with scattered areas of darker staining. Hilt retains well over 90% of its original gilded finish and remains quite tight. (02-23022/BF). $500-800.
