A wonderful light blue militia or infantry kepi dating as early as the Civil War to the late 1870s. A fine quality officer’s-grade kepi with a silver bullion quatrefoil on the crown. The band area has two rows of bullion 3/8” tape. Nice early tarred leather chinstrap with a single frame buckle terminated by two Civil War-era staff buttons. The black visor has a bound edge. The interior is lined with a patterned black cloth that appears to be cotton. The sweatband is present but degraded from years of use. CONDITION: the body of the hat shows minor moth damage and the quatrefoil is complete. The bullion edging, chinstrap, side buttons, and visor are complete with light to moderate wear. The interior is complete with tacking threads intact. The sweatband has losses and tears but is substantially present. An excellent kepi worthy of more research. (02-22412/BF). $400-800.
