TRAPDOOR RIFLE. Cal. 45-70. NSN. Beautiful officer's model with 26" barrel, Lyman hinged combination front sight, long range adjustable rear sight, graduated to 1200 yards. An additional 3.5" graduated tang sight is attached to the top of wrist. Breech block marked: "MODEL 1873" / eaglehead / crossed arrows / "US". Lock marked "US / SPRINGFIELD / 1873" along with spread wing eagle. Lock, hammer, breech, barrel band, and buttplate scroll engraved. Mounted on standard straight grain walnut stock with checkered forearm & wrist, "P" proof rear of trigger guard. Forend is sculpted engraved pewter. Wood cleaning rod has nickel plated brass tips. There are no government assembly marks inside trigger bow or on stock. CONDITION: fine overall, appears complete and original, barrel retains about 25% original blue finish with balance a mottled plum/brown. Stock refinished, with well disguised wrist repair, few small hairlines, eroded & worn area of checkering just forward and below lock. Crisp mechanics, bright rifled bore with light pitting near muzzle. Trigger bow is not engraved and possibly replaced as most officer models of this type have markings inside bow and are engraved en suite. (01-24153/JS). ANTIQUE. $12,500-16,500.
