1) M1840. This is an imported M1840 style cavalry saber measuring 43” overall with a 36” blade. Plain blade with a single wide fuller and secondary fuller near the spine. The ricasso is stamped “2.61”. Solid brass hilt with 2-branch guard. Wire-wrapped brown leather grip. Iron scabbard. This sword has an oral family history of belonging to Private John F.H. Hooper Co. H, 29th Pennsylvania Infantry. We feel this attribution is, at best, suspect primarily because it is a cavalry saber. CONDITION: blade shows light wear with a gray patina. Hilt is solid. Grip appears to be replaced, and the scabbard has been painted black. 2) M1860. This is a reproduction of a US M1860 cavalry saber measuring 42” overall with a 34 1/4" blade. Blade has a single wide fuller with a secondary fuller. Ricasso is marked “AMES MFG CO CHICOPEE MASS” on one side, and “U.S / ADK / 1862”. Brass hilt. Wire-wrapped leather grip. Iron scabbard. CONDITION: light wear overall. This sword is a reproduction. PROVENANCE: From the Collection of James B. Taylor. (02-19881-2/BF). $200-400.
