WITH BUTTONS.
1) ALABAMA. This red cockade has a flower that is approx. 3" in diameter. Below the flower are 4 short sections of ribbon. In the center of the flower, is a Civil War period Alabama staff button. The button depicts the seal of Alabama on the face and the reverse reads, "SUPERFIN + PARIS + ". Rather than being made in Europe, research has shown that this button was likely made in the Northern states and the backmark was used to help forego prosecution for business dealings with the Confederacy. The button is termed by Albert an AB-1-A5. CONDITION: the red silk flower shows wear but remains substantially solid. The button shows exceptional detail but does exhibit a push in the face.
2) VIRGINIA. This red, white & blue cockade has a 1 3/4" circular cockade above 3 ribbons with bullion tassels at the base. In the center of the cockade, is a pre-Civil War period Virginia button. The button depicts the state seal of Virginia on the face with "VIRGINIA" above & "SIC . SEMPER . TYRANNIS ." below. The reverse reads, "W. G. MINTZER . PHILD ". This button was produced in the North and shipped south probably just before the war. The button is termed by Albert an VA-16-A. CONDITION: the circular cockade is a bit tattered on the edges. The red ribbon shows separations and the loss of its tassels. The blue & white ribbon are nearly complete. The button is dirty but retains most of its original gilding. (02-17880/BF). $1,600-2,000.
