1) M1840 MEDICAL STAFF. Overall length: 39”. Blade length: 30”. Blade is etched over 2/3 of its length w/ various military, patriotic & foliate motifs including a caduceus on each side. Blade is etched near the ricasso, “AMES MFG CO CHICOPEE MASS”. Gilded brass hilt w/ shield languets & acanthus leaf guard. Grip has an eagle medallion on the front w/ a pineapple finial at the pommel. Gilded brass, highly embellished scabbard marked, “AMES MFG CO CHICOPEE MASS” near the throat. CONDITION: blade has a light gray patina w/ a few scattered spots of oxidation. Etching is very crisp. Gilding on hilt is approx. 65%. Scabbard retains most of its original gilding & has a notable dent near the tip & 10” up from the tip. There is a sm. period repair at the lower ring mount. An exceptionally attractive example of a scarce sword. 2) M1850 HIGHER GRADE STAFF & FIELD. Overall length: 40 1/2". Blade length: 34”. Blade has a single lg. fuller w/ a narrow fuller near the spine. Blade is etched over 1/2 its length w/ various military, patriotic & foliate motifs. Blade is etched, “IRON PROOF” on the spine. Gilded brass hilt. Triple wire wrapped, sharkskin grip. Gilded brass mounted, plum brown iron scabbard. Top ring mount has a blank shield for an engraved presentation. Drag has a well executed American eagle. CONDITION: beautiful blade w/ areas of original factory polish. Hilt retains some areas of original gilding. Grip & wire are completely intact. Scabbard has areas of gilding in protected areas. Plum brown finish is 95%. (02-14246/BF). $1,800-2,400.
