These bang sticks got their name because they were often used as walking sticks, and the iron apparatus at the base could be loaded with a cap and "banged" on the ground, initiating a loud firing of the cap. They were often used to drive off overly aggressive pets or wild animals. They measure approx. 29 1/2" in length, with the head measuring 6". The 23 1/2" wooden shaft ends in a round knop on the tip (one missing). The firing mechanism is marked "NATIONAL" on one side, and the other side is marked "PATD.6.29.09." CONDITION: The wooden shafts are solid, and the iron firing mechanisms both seem to function well. (02-23776/BF). $200-300.
