1) This early fire helmet has a leather front plate that reads, “RUTHERFORD / 2 / LCL”. Front plate is red, black & white leather. The crest of the helmet is decorated w/ a brass effigy of a fireman speaking through a trumpet. The crown & brim are black & the crown has 4 raised ridges. The brim has a tooled design around the entire edge. The interior has the remains of a cotton liner. CONDITION: the front of the brim has losses to the leather revealing the iron wire interior stabilizer. The front plate is loose & shows losses to some of the lettering. The remainder of the helmet shows light to moderate wear. 2) This early American fire helmet does not have a front plate but has a lg. eagle head at the top of the front ridge. The crown & brim are black decorated w/ embossed & gold highlighted vines & lineal decoration. The crown has 4 raised ridges & there is a hanging loop on the back of the helmet. The helmet lining is padded felt & appears to have fold down ear flaps. CONDITION: helmet shows light overall wear for its age. (02-14336(2)/BF). $600-1,000.
