RETREAT IN 1942. This group contains a British Union Jack and a Red Cross flag. The flags were cut down by an American Red Cross officer during his evacuation of Tobruk with British forces. Later, approximately 33,000 British prisoners would be taken at Tobruk. After the death of the Red Cross officer in 1962 , the flags were given by his widow to an Irishman, who in turn gave them to William Dunn, who gave them to our consignor. The Red Cross flag measures approximately 25" X 23" and is quite tattered. The Union Jack measures approximately 38" X 22 1/2" and is also quite tattered. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: A letter explaining how the flags left Tobruk and their ownership afterwards. CONDITION: as stated both flags are very tattered but remain very recognizable and stable. (02-25502/BF). $1000-2000.
