1) ARMY. A good example of an Indian War period army chapeau de bras by Horstmann. Chapeau has a gold bullion oval-shaped cockade on the side that shows an American cockade eagle above and a staff button below. There is a bullion tassel on either end and the remains of an ostrich feather on the top. Tan leather sweatband with blue silk liner that reads "HORSTMANN BROS & CO PHILADELPHIA". CONDITION: the silk ribbons on either end are quite tattered. The chapeau has edge wear, and there is a split in the crown at the fold. Feather has losses. Insignia remains crisp. 2) NAVY. An Indian War period Navy officer’s chapeau with a gold bullion tape flash on the side with a Naval officer’s button at the base. There are two bullion tassels on either end and an oak leaf and acorn binding at the top edges. Black leather sweatband with a maroon silk liner that is gold-embossed "BENT & BUSH". The chapeau comes with its original tin carrying case with functional latch and handle. CONDITION: chapeau generally shows light wear overall with some minor loss of knap at the edges. Tin case has very light oxidation and remains quite solid and undamaged. (02-22878/BF). $300-500.
