TRIALS PICTURED IN "US MILITARY HOLSTER & RELATED ACCOUTREMENTS" BY EDWARD SCOTT MEADOWS. These holsters are pictured on page 160 of said book. Per the book "These holsters were designed by 1st Lieutenant J.A. Gaston, Adjutant, 8th Cavalry, and submitted on April 27, 1892... The holsters were issue to three troops of the 8th Cavalry for field trial with instruction to report on same... No further action was taken in regard to the Gaston holster". These open top black bridle leather holsters are made specifically for easy access to the Colt SAA revolvers then in use. 1) stamped on belt loop "ROCK ISLAND / ARSENAL / W.T.G." & "J.L." The muzzle end of the holster is open to allow dirt, dust & rain to pass through the holster. 2) Unmarked holster. The muzzle end of the holsters are open with 2 flaps to allow dirt, dust & rain to pass through the holster. CONDITION: very fine. Both holster are in very good intact condition showing light flexing & cracking of leather commensurate with age. PROVENANCE: The Collection of Edward Scott Meadows. (02-22123/MD). $1,000-2,000.
