LAUTENSCHLAGER. Robert Lautenschlager, 1920-1975, of Oshkosh, Wisconsin, was a popular artist amongst Oshkosh residents during the 1960's & 70's. Internet research indicates that though he dated his murals, Lautenschlager's paintings were rarely dated. Lautenschlager was drafted into the army in WW2 & served in North Africa. While in service, he drew cartoons that were published. After the war, he returned home & w/ the help of the GI Bill, enrolled in the Layton School of Art. The portraits in this lot may be based on Willie & Joe, cartoon characters created by Bill Mauldin for “Stars and Stripes” & later published in Mauldin's book “Up Front”. It's possible that Mauldin may have met Lautenschlager while serving in North Africa. Subject matter depicts the reality of American GIs as they looked after long periods of weary frontline combat. Paintings are approx. 20 1/2" x 24 1/2”, including black metal frames. Paintings are visually impactful. CONDITION: paintings are in fine condition showing minimal handling wear. Frames have light wear & scattered scratches. (02-21030/BF). $300-500.
