1. SPRINGFIELD M1866 2ND ALLIN CONVERSION. Cal. 50-70. NSN. Bbl. 28 7/8". Rifle has been shortened, likely for school or cadet use. Folding leaf rear sight. Stud type front sight. Breech block is dated 1866 and has the eagle head acceptance mark. Thumb latch without checkering. Screw on thumb latch is replacement. Beveled lockplate dated 1865 is also marked with spread-wing eagle and "U.S. SPRINGFIELD". Two piece trigger guard. Solid buttplate marked with "U.S." and "11". Walnut stock has been shortened at the forward end, leaving the middle and lower bands. The grip has been thinned, which is common to these rifles. Markings rendered obscure due to arsenal rework refinish. Ramrod is present, not threaded at lower end. CONDITION: stock has arsenal rework type finish with added finish over extensive wear, dents and handling marks. Large open crack on right side extending between nose cap and band spring. Worn metal turned overall gray and patina. Thumb latch is notably loose. Worn dark bore with oxidation and pitting throughout. PROVENANCE: From the PMRB Collection. (01-28421/RW). 2. SPINGFIELD 1873 CUTDOWN RIFLE. Cal. 45-70. S# 67945. Bbl. 23". Ladder rear sight grad to 11. 1873 dated lock and breech block. Faint stock cartouche. CONDITION: Overall fair. Cleaned metal surfaces have a grey patina. Stock has numerous handling marks and dings. Fair bore with pitting. (25-5985/ZAL) ANTIQUE. $400-600
