WAR PONCHO.
1) 1879 SADDLE BAG. An M1879 Whitman saddle bag for use by the US Cavalry. Saddle bag is dark leather w/ a pebbled finish. There are 3 straps closing the flap on each side. Under the center strap is an impressed “US” in oval. The bottom of each bag has the proper 1" brass ring. CONDITION: amazingly, all straps & buckles are present & complete. The bags are sound & pliable. The connecting strap is solid but somewhat flaked.
2) 1896 SADDLE BAG. An early M1896 saddle bag for use by the US Cavalry. This example is marked on the connecting strap, “ROCK ISLAND ARSENAL 1903” which was the first year these bags were dated. The russet leather bags have a pebbled finish. There are 3 straps closing the flap on each side. All buckles, rings & related metal parts have a brown anodized finish as only seen on the earliest examples of the M1896. Under the center strap is an impressed “US” in oval. The 1" brass rings are present but are on the lower side of each bag rather than at the bottom as in the M1879. CONDITION: the bags are very sound & remain pliable. The connecting strap is solid. All straps & buckles are complete. (02-15750(2)/BF).
3) PONCHO. A rare & seldom encountered example of a Spanish American War US Army poncho. This poncho is made of cotton w/ the outside painted/tarred black to achieve waterproofing. It is secured by several snaps that are finished in black enamel. The poncho has several different unit markings throughout. A rare survivor from the Spanish American War. CONDITION: light to moderate use overall w/ some flaking/crazing to the finish. Overall poncho remains surprisingly solid & intact. (02-15757/BF). $1,000-1,500.
