OFFICER NAMED WATSON. These two helmets were sent back during WWII to the officer’s son, W. James Watson, who was 12 years old at the time. The helmets have been with Dr. Watson since 1942 until they were sold in 2013 to the consignor with a signed letter attesting to their provenance. That letter is included with this lot, as well as numerous WWII period photographs.
1) M1935. This fine helmet has an original camouflage painted finish that resembles what is normally referred to as Normandy camouflage. The mottled gold-green painted finish has a bit of red near the crown. The left side has a Wehrmacht eagle and there is no decal on the right. The inside rear of the helmet is difficult to read because of the paint, but appears to be “81381” and the inside left is stamped “E.F.66”. Black leather chinstrap and brown leather 8-tongue liner. CONDITION: helmet’s camouflage finish is approx. 75%. The Wehrmacht decal is 85%. Chinstrap and liner show light to moderate wear.
2) M1942. This helmet has a dark gray-black painted finish with a Wehrmacht decal on the left side. The inside rear is stamped “2108” and the inside left is stamped “ET60”. It has a black leather chinstrap and a light brown leather size 56 liner. CONDITION: helmet finish is approx. 85%. Wehrmacht decal is approx. 70%. Chinstrap & liner show light to moderate overall wear. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: a signed letter from Dr. W. James Watson attesting to the provenance of the helmets written on the consignor’s business stationary. Several WWII period photographs from the estate of the WWII Dental Officer. PROVENANCE: From the Lifelong Collection of Glen E. Mattox. (02-18303/BF). $1,500-2,200.
