ROOSEVELT. The earliest of these documents is dated March 20, 1897, and has the printed heading "United States Naval Force on Asiatic Station" and orders a Naval Cadet to Annapolis for final examination. The letter is signed by Rear Admiral F.V. McNair from the Flagship Olympia. McNair was a future commandant of the Naval Academy. The letter bears a stamp at the bottom that reads "Navy Department. Approved APR28 1897" and is signed in black ink "T. Roosevelt" with the title "Acting Secretary". The second letter is dated June 19, 1897, and has the printed heading "NAVY DEPARTMENT, WASHINGTON". The letter orders the same Naval Cadet to the Washington Navy Yard. The closing of the letter is "Respectfully, T. Roosevelt Acting Secretary." The third letter is on private stationary with the printed heading "OYSTER BAY LONG ISLAND, N.Y." and is dated July 31, 1918. The short letter is closed, "Faithfully yours, Theodore Roosevelt". CONDITION: all three letters are in remarkably good condition with very slight yellowing. The first letter has a very tiny loss at the base and a slight separation at the edge of the folds. The second letter has no faults, and the third letter has two small 1/2" tears, not affecting the content of the letter. (02-23298-6/BF). $700-1,100.
