1) AMES. A US M1860 cavalry saber measuring 42 1/2" overall with a 34 3/4" plain blade with a single wide fuller and secondary fuller near the spine. The ricasso is stamped "U.S. C.E.W. 1864" and "AMES MFG CO CHICOPEE". Brass hilt with standard two-branch, semi-basket guard. Wire-wrapped leather grip. Iron scabbard. CONDITION: blade has a cleaned, gray patina. Hilt has a mellow, mottled patina. Leather grip is complete but shows significant wear. Wire is 100%. Scabbard has a dark patina with no notable dents. 2) IMPORT. A US M1840 imported cavalry saber of German origin. Overall length: 44 1/4". Blade length: 36 1/2". Blade has a single wide fuller with a secondary fuller near the spine. The ricasso is stamped "C & J". Brass hilt of classic semi-basket form. Plain pommel and leather grip with wire wrap. Iron scabbard that appears to have an old, black-painted finish. CONDITION: blade has a light gray patina. Hilt has a dark, lightly oxidized patina. Leather is better than 90%, and wire is complete. Scabbard remains dent-free and has a 70% black finish with oxidized spots. 3) IMPORT. A US M1840 imported cavalry saber of German origin. Overall length: 43 3/4". Blade length: 35 5/8". Blade has a single wide fuller with a secondary fuller near the spine. The ricasso is stamped with a knight’s head. Brass hilt of classic semi-basket form. Plain pommel and leather grip with the remains of wire wrap. Iron scabbard that appears to have an old, black and gold-painted finish, as sometimes seen in early GAR posts. CONDITION: blade has a medium gray, mottled patina. Hilt has a dark, aged patina. Leather is virtually complete, but wire is only about 10% intact. Scabbard is undamaged but does show wear to the black and gold painted finish. (02-22918-2/BF). $900-1,200.
