1) V-44. Overall length: 14 1/8”. Blade length: 9 3/8”. A fine example of the V-44 survival knife by Collins & Co. The bowie style blade has 2 narrow fullers at the top of each side. Blade is marked at the ricasso, “COLLINS & CO.(arm & hammer)LEGITIMUS MADE IN U.S.A. NO. 18”. Brass crossguard. Green horn 2 piece grip w/ 4 rivets on each side. Brown leather tooled sheath marked on the face, “COLLINS & CO (arm & hammer) LEGITIMUS”. Sheath is stamped “18”. CONDITION: blade has a pleasing medium gray patina. Grip generally shows light to moderate wear. Sheath shows light wear overall. 2) V-44. Overall length: 14”. Blade length: 9 1/4”. A fine example of the V-44 survival knife by Collins & Co. CONDITION: blade has a medium gray patina w/ evidence of sharpening at the edge. Grip shows light to moderate wear. Sheath shows light wear. 3) V-44 STYLE. Overall length: 15 5/8”. Blade length: 10 1/4". An interesting example of a V-44 style survival knife possibly made aboard ship. Bowie style blade w/ no fullers. Ricasso is hand engraved, “Franklin C Johnson (in script) U.S. NAVY”. Aluminum crossguard. 2 Piece wood grip that appears to have had 3 rivets on each side & there is a lanyard hole at the top. Heavy brown leather sheath. CONDITION: blade has a cleaned medium gray finish w/ scattered dark areas of oxidation. Grip shows minor dents & dings. Sheath shows light wear overall but is missing 2 rivets at the belt loop. PROVENANCE: Collection of Roger Ballard. (02-14709-9/BF). $800-1,200.
