6’ x 6’ silk embroidered, gold fringe, motto: “WE WILL TRY” on ribbon in eagle’s beak. Crest of minute man over rising sun taken from New York state seal where unit was originally allocated. Forming in July 1918 the regiment was a component unit of the 98th Infantry Division whose headquarters was first activated in Alabama during October 1918. In June 1921, the division became part of the Organized Reserve and was assigned to upstate New York, about time of manufacture of flag. On September 15th, 1942, the division was reactivated in Kentucky with troops coming from New York and some New England states. After training in the maneuvers in Middle Tennessee and then Alabama, the command was earmarked for the Pacific Theater.
The division arrived in Hawaii in mid-April 1944 where it became part of the garrison of Hawaii where it would remain for most of the war. In May 1945 the division received orders to train for the invasion of Japan in the first wave dubbed Operation Olympic set for November 1945. However, the surrender of Japan made the planned invasions moot but the command arrived in Japan in late September and remained there until deactivation on February 16, 1946.
The regiment’s flag is blue, the historical colors of US infantry.
