1) CAVALRY. This helmet is done in the English style and has a 4 piece body with 2 interior labels that simply read “11” & “169”. The bottom edge of the front of the helmet is edged with brass. The front plate has the New York State arms with crossed sabers and a cutout “1” in the center. The side buttons appear to be decorative shields. The black plume sits on a large quatrefoil base with a 4" shaft & holder. The chinstrap is of chain link style. CONDITION: helmet body remains quite solid. Liner is a bit tattered. Plume is somewhat faded.
2) INFANTRY. This helmet is done in US M1881 style and has a 4 piece body with an interior label in the crown that reads “RIDABOCH & CO., FORMERLY BAKER & MCKENNEY, NEW YORK.” The front plate has the New York State arms. The side buttons are crossed rifles. Spike has an oak leaf base. The chinstrap is of chain link style. CONDITION: helmet body remains quite solid as does the liner.
3) MILITIA. A M1872 style shako with leather crown & band. The large interior label reads “FROM BAKER & MCKENNEY Manufacturers of and Dealers in MILITARY GOODS 141 GRAND STREET, NEW YORK.” Front plate has a New York eagle sitting atop a 4 branch insignia with interior circle that reads “National Guard” around a central black medallion with the number “16”. This indicates use by the 16th New York National Guard. The elongated pompom at the top is white. CONDITION: helmet shows some wear & scratches to the crown but the body remains quite solid.
4) MILITIA. A M1872 style shako with leather crown & band. The large interior label reads “HENRY V. ALLIEN & CO., SUCCESSORS TO Horstmann Bros. & Allien, MILITARY FURNISHERS 734 BROADWAY, NEW YORK.” Front plate has an 8 pointed sunburst with interior circle that reads “National Guard” around a central black medallion with the number “71”. This indicates use by the famous 71st New York National Guard. The elongated pompom at the top is white. CONDITION: helmet shows some storage wear with paper stuck to the base of the visor. Overall, the hat remains quite strong. PROVENANCE: From the Raymond Darida Estate. (02-18035-4/BF). $800-1,100.
