3’ x 4’ double applique embroidered on crimson red field, circa 1950. Army Ordnance units handled combat vehicle repairs plus weapons and also make up the EOD (explosives removal) units of the Army. Considering the flag is only marked “408th Ordnance,” this was probably a company sized unit of which was often typical although battalion sized units also existed.
The flag of the 408th Ordnance is crimson which was first established as the color for this service branch in 1851. In 1902, the branch colors became scarlet and black but in the service the colors became crimson and yellow.
CONDITION: very good to fine, light fading. (02-17547-38/JS). $200-400.
