This bear trap may date from 1893-1911 and was possibly made by Sewell Newhouse himself. It measures over 34" in length and comes complete with a very heavy tie down chain. There are step on springs on each end with 6 iron interlocking teeth on the two jaws. The central pad is marked “S. NEWHOUSE NO. 5. ONEIDA COMMUNITY N.Y.”. The Oneida Community was a religious group of approximately 250 members whose core belief was harmonious group living and attainment of human perfection through mutual cooperation and collaboration. At its height, the Oneida Community was producing thousands of traps a year. CONDITION: trap has an overall oxidized patina. The trap appears to function well and has no broken or missing parts.
