SCENES. A large collection of approximately 59 photographic dry plates depicting views of Africa, its indigenous peoples, and safari scenes. Glass photographic dry plates are a late 1800s invention where by glass plates were coated with a light sensitive dry silver gelatin emulsion. This 1871 invention allowed photographers to prepare the plates prior to use and develop them later. This replaced the awkward and messy wet colloidion process allowing much greater mobility and convenience for photographers. CONDITION: the outer boxes are quite worn and some are incomplete. The plates are undamaged and appear quite clear. The group represents a brilliant visual study of Africa during the 19th century. (02-27035/BF). NON-GUN. $400-600.
