LADY FRIEND. Ambrotype came from estate in the Shenandoah Valley w/ items associated w/ George Preston Humphrey (1846-1916). George was too young for the Civil War but came from a very lg. family & there must be a relation of this fine, young bearded man wearing dark militia frock coat w/ 2nd Lt. straps, brandishing a colt pocket revolver, possibly w/ loving wife or sister. CONDITION: very good overall. Good contrast & definition. Camera is focused on the faces showing good detail of facial features, but unfortunately cannot see the design on the buttons on his coat. Pistol is distinct enough to identify as a Colt Model 1849 w/ 4" oct. bbl. Iridescent halo at the upper & right hand edges of image, unaffecting the 2 figures. The original paper veneered hard case is missing hinge, but otherwise good condition. (02-14883/JS). $2,000-3,000.
