SPORTING RIFLE. Cal. 55. S# 314 (1859). Factory records indicate that this is a second quality single shot rifle with two groove rifling. In fact this barrel's rifling is multi- groove, but obviously original! Octagon damascus barrel measures 29" and is fitted with one standing and three nested leaf folding rear sight which appears to have been moved 4" closer to muzzle. Front sight is a rather modern sourdough type. Top flat is engraved "Alex.r Henry. Edinburgh". Barrel is fitted with an under rib and has London black powder proofs on bottom flat along with S#, "A.H." and caliber "33" bore. Breech plug with scroll engraving on top flat is unvented. Front spring lock without safety has flat faced serpentine hammer. It and case hardened breech iron are scroll engraved. "Alex.r Henry" is in front of running stag scene. Trigger plate has pineapple finial. Trigger guard, engraved with hounds chasing a stag on bow, has S# behind bow and extends to a spur forming grip. European walnut stock with some fiddle figure has horn tip and measures 14-3/8" over steel buttplate with long top tang engraved with scroll and deer scene. Walnut ramrod with horn tip and brass tail (worm under cap) mounts through two plain pipes and well filed thimble. Stock attaches to barrel with side bolt through steel escutcheons and is checkered at grip and forend. A silver rectangle at top of grip is pierced and threaded for a lollipop type tang sight. CONDITION: very good to fine. Barrel retaining over 60% original brown with good definition to pattern. Over 30% case hardening color remains on lock, breech iron and trigger plate. Traces of re-blue remain on buttplate and trigger guard. Stock shows some oil rubbed in over what appears to be original finish and has a fair number of marks and scratches. Bore is bright, sharp and shiny with one or two minor small pits toward muzzle. Locks is crisp. Original rear sight dovetail has not been filled. PROVENANCE: from the renowned collection of quality sporting arms from Lewis Drake together with inventory of Lewis Drake Associates. (01-26117/MGM). ANTIQUE. $3,000-6,000.
