BUFFALO STYLE RIFLE. Cal. 45-100, 2-7/8" Straight. S#. C43318. Bbl. 29 1/4" heavy octagon measuring 1 3/16" across flats at the muzzle. Rocky Mountain front sight with elevator adj. V-notch sporting rear sight. Top flat is marked "A J STAUS/ MISSOULA MT, a known and identified frontier gunsmith. "American Gunsmiths", by Frank M. Sellers gives the following listing "STAUS, A.J., Missoula, Montana, 1881-1886d, Spokane, Washington, 1886d.". Only other bbl. marking is the cal. marking at the breech end. Case colored conversion military action with lock contours altered to resemble the Model 1874. Left side has filled hole for saddle ring bar attachment. Action is fitted with double set triggers. Pewter tipped replacement walnut forearm. Original military walnut stock with rifle buttplate retains base for saddle ring bar attachment. Hard wood wiping rod is held by 2 faceted iron pipes. Weight: 14lbs. 3.2oz. CONDITION: bbl. retains over 60% dull fading blue showing edge wear with spots of finish loss and corrosion. Action retains traces of lightly visible case colors. Wood has lightly worn finish showing scattered scratches and marks. Forearm has a hairline crack extending from the left side of the receiver. Stock is missing a long chip beneath the lockplate.
