ENGRAVED COLT MODEL 1849 POCKET REVOLVERS WITH FACTORY IVORY GRIPS INSCRIBED TO CIVIL WAR COLONEL WILLIAM H. DeBEVOISE WHO LED THE 14th BROOKLYN AT SOUTH MOUNTAIN AND ANTIETAM.
These ornate revolvers are inscribed to William H. DeBevoise (1826-1886). At age 35, in 1861 he enlisted at the rank of Captain in Company H of the 14th Brooklyn, New York State Militia. He was promoted to Lt. Colonel on Oct 24, 1862 & led the 14th at the battles of South Mountain, Antietam & the Maryland Campaign. He ws discharged for disability on May 11th 1863. After the war, DeBevoise became Colonel of the 14th regiment, New York National Guard, 1869-1878. Both guns are cal. 31. Bbls. 6” octagon w/ engraved “Saml Colt” markings. Five shot roll engraved cylinders. Bbls & cylinders have blue finish, receivers, loading levers & hammers are case colored. Brass grip straps are silver finished. Receivers have standard donut scroll hand engraving that extends to bbl. flats, loading levers, trigger guards & backtraps. 1 piece Ivory grips. Backstraps are inscribed “Presented to Capt. Wm. H. DeBevoise / 14th Regt. N. Y. L. M.”. (1) S#: 173321. Front grip strap is inscribed “Lexington by (over a rectangle) 310. Nov. 4th 1861”. (2) S# 174851. Front grip strap is inscribed “From Lexington (rectangular marking) No. 310.”. Engraving inscriptions are in the same style but done by different hands on the two guns. S#s indicate 1860 mfg. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: proper Wood casing with fitted interior. Case contains 2 sealed 250 round Colt marked cap tins with blue labels & 1 package of six combustible envelope 31-100 cartridges. Case exterior shows small dents & marks. Burgundy colored velour interior has faded to tan in exposed areas. CONDITION: (1) Bbl & action retain over 80% blue & case colored finish. Grip straps show over 70% silver finish. Cylinder retains very clear scene. Grips show yellowing predominantly on right panel with small chip at toe of right panel. Mechanics are sound. Bore is bright with strong rifling. (2) Bbl & action retain over 60% blue & case colored finish showing carry & edge wear. Grip straps retain 60% silver finish showing areas of dark tarnish. Cylinder retains 50% fading blue with clear scene. Grips show yellowing most noticeable on right panel with large chip at toe. Left panel has small crack at heel. Sound action. Bore retains lightly worn rifling showing some very light roughness. (01-21943/MRZ). ANTIQUE. $15,000-25,000.
