TIGERS FLIGHT JACKET & CAP. A truly superb early WWII greenish khaki cotton poplin flight jacket with a brown leather collar. There is brown leather trim down the front, across the bottom, around the cuffs, and on the edge of the flaps for the two diagonal slash pockets on the front. Inside the right pocket is a cloth tag that reads "Phila. Quartermaster Depot Inspected by". The zipper on the front is marked "TALON" and all buttons are brown plastic. The interior lining is fine OD wool, and there is a torn hanging loop at the collar. The right breast bears a large 5 1/2" diameter leather patch depicting a flying elephant carrying red cargo over mountains. This is possibly for the 11th Cargo Carrying Squadron of the 3rd Cargo Carrying Group of the 10th Air Force. The left breast has an impressed leather 4" nametag that reads "J.R. FAHNESTOCK". The left sleeve has a printed and embroidered CBI patch, and the right sleeve has a 10th Air Force patch. At the top of each shoulder is a brown and white leather set of Captain's bars. The rear of the jacket has a fantastic leather blood chit depicting the American flag and Chinese National flag above a white panel with several Chinese characters. The leather baseball-style flight hat is constructed of tan and brown leather, and features a 10th Air Force patch on the right side and an embroidered Flying Tigers patch on the left side. The front has a brown and white leather Captain's bar that matches the bars on the jacket. The hat has two snaps on either side with a clip on either side that has two rivets marked "RAU FASTENER CO." A unique opportunity to acquire a flight jacket that is worthy of being a centerpiece in even the most advanced WWII aviation collection. CONDITION: the jacket is exceptionally solid with some wear and minor scuffing to the leather. All patches are solid and original to the jacket, as is the blood chit and rank insignia. Likewise, all insignia and patches are original to the hat. (02-22921-2/BF). $2,000-3,000.
