Cal. 28. S# 109. Bbl. 3 11/16". Single shot derringer pistol produced by an unknown mfg. The top flat of the octagonal bbl. is marked A WURFFLEIN PHILA", which appears to have been added at a later date. Research does not reflect that the Wurfflein family, especially Andrew Wurfflein, as having produced this model of pistol, with the Wurfflein family of gunsmiths having notably produced tip-up target pistols. Rear strap of frame is spuriously engraved "Lt Col. AH Franklin". Upper quarter flats of bbl. light later added scrollwork at the muzzle. Brass frame exhibits a nickel plated finish. Frame is mounted with 2-piece natural white grips, with an encircled "CSA" etched on the right panel and apparent initials "A/ H/ J" etched on the left panel. Flat German silver blade front sight with notched rear sight on hammer spur. S# "109" is present on the frame and underside of the bbl. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: antique wood display case featuring a blue fabric lining. Lid is inlaid with a brass shield escutcheon, which is engraved with what appears to be a later added "A H F/ C S A". CONDITION: brass frame retains fair to good amounts of its nickel plated finish, showing areas of wear. Brass has acquired a mellow patina. Bbl. exhibits an unusual mottled brown and dark gray appearance, with scattered spots of light to mild pitting. Bore exhibits dark oxidation, while retaining fair to good rifling throughout. Proper manual mechanics. Grips show some light superficial handling marks, but are otherwise sound. Case shows scattered marks and minor impressions from handling and storage. (25-1437/MLW). CURIO. $100-200.
