This 6th plate ambrotype is reported to be General Danville Leadbetter, who was born in Maine but fought for the Confederacy in his adopted state of Alabama during the Civil War. He graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1836 and was 3rd in his class. He initially joined the 1st Artillery, but shortly transferred to the Engineers. He became a well-known and highly regarded engineer prior to the Civil War. He fought for his adopted state of Alabama and served in the Confederate Engineers, rising to the rank of General. After the war, he fled to Mexico and subsequently moved to Canada. This image shows a seated waist-up view in civilian clothing. There is a gilded brass mat & frame, and a pasteboard photo case. CONDITION: image remains quite sharp. The spine of the case has been reinforced. (02-20981/BF). $200-400.
