A massive 18th century American powder from the State of Maine and dating to the French and Indian War period. This horn measures over 16" in length and 4" in diameter at the butt. The horn is engraved " Lake George July ye 26 1758 " and " EDMUND BAYLEY His Horn Wrot In Canada River July ye 11th 1759 ". The horn is also engraved with the large initials " E - B " and a large crosshatched area that appears to be a representation of Lake George, New York. The original wooden plug is intact and attached with a combination of non-ferrous pegs and 2 iron nails. The nonagonal spout is well formed and measures about 1 3/4" in length. Edmund Bailey was born in the year 1741 in Minot, Maine which is southwest of Augusta. He was a soldier in Captain Davenport's Company during the 1759 expedition to Canada. After his service during the French and Indian War he became a sea captain and lived in Portland, Maine. He moved back to Minot and served during the American Revolution with a Massachusetts Militia unit raised in Poland, Maine. He died in 1808 and is buried in Hodge Cemetery in Minot. CONDITION: this fine horn shows light but expected wear throughout with light chipping around the edges of the butt. (02-25204/BF). $5000-10000
