COMMITTEE OF SAFETY TYPE MUSKET. Cal. 69. NSN. Bbl. 46 1/2" w/ slight oct. rear section stamped “PR”. Lock w/ arched & chamfered flat plate having rebated tail fitted w/ serpentine cock, inset faceted pan, bridled friction frizzen & feather spring w/ bulbous finial having teat. Lockplate in front of cock stamped “SE” under a crown (St. Entienne). Interior of lock stamped “DECUR???”. Early style full stock of cherry wood attaches to bbl. w/ 3 driven on bands & has handrail type comb & is iron mounted. Trigger has early type backward curl & triggerguard is of early French style w/ elongated finials. Buttplate is of sheet iron. There are no noted markings & musket was not ever fitted w/ sling loops. Iron trumpet head ramrod is present. CONDITION: fair to good. Iron parts w/ cleaning to mostly bright highlights w/ background of dark brown to black patina. Stock w/ old oil refinish has sharp edges rounded. There are losses to wood at front & rear of lockplate. Bbl. channel is good. Rusted bore. Lock operable but shows evidence of internal reworking w/ new sear spring. PROVENANCE: From the Collection of James B. Taylor. (01-20491/MGM). ANTIQUE. $2,000-3,000.
