OF JAMES LONGSTREET. James Longstreet was one of the most famous Confederate Generals of the Civil War, perhaps best known for his service at Gettysburg. This letter has a sight size of approximately 7" x 5". It has a heading that reads "Washington, DC May 22d 1858" and is addressed to "Maj. I. McDowell Asst Adjt Gen". McDowell is best remembered for his catastrophic defeat at the hands of Confederate forces during the First Battle of Bull Run. The letter is boldly signed "James Longstreet Capt. 8th Inf. Bt. Maj." The letter is attractively framed with a copy of a photograph of Longstreet in his Confederate General’s uniform along with a short biography of Longstreet. The frame measures approximately 24" x 17". CONDITION: the letter has not been examined out of the frame; however, it shows minor fold creases with no notable damage. The ink is dark and clear, and the paper has barely yellowed. The frame shows handling wear only. (02-23292-1/BF). $800-1,400.
