CORNELIUS ATTWOOD TO BREVET LT. COLONEL. 18.5" x 14.4" Vellum printed commission w/ War Department attached seal, signed in facsimile by President Andrew Johnson & Secretary of War Edwin Stanton. Docketed & signed by Assistant adjutant general E. D. Townsend, May 25, 1866. Cornelius Attwood has fine war record in the 25th Massachusetts, serving from April 1861 till being badly wounded at the battle of Cold Harbor in June 1864. Major Attwood would be discharged a few months later & later rewarded w/ this brevet for “gallant & meritorious service during the war”. CONDITION: fair to good overall printed document & signatures easily discerned though filled in ink inscriptions very-light, & harder to read. Several small insect holes, foxing.
