REVOLVER. Cal. 45 Colt. S# 12199. Bbl. 5 1/8". According to The Book of Colt Firearms by R.L. Wilson, this example was the final Model 1878 Frontier double action revolver, mfg. by Colt in 1883, with 1884 production starting at S# 12200. The top of the bbl. is marked with Colt's single line address, with "45 CAL" marked on the left side of the trigger guard. Major metal components exhibit a nickel-plated finish overall, with some smaller components, including the frame screws, cyl. base pin screw, trigger, hammer (backstrap), and lanyard loop, exhibiting a nickel-blue finish. Frame is mounted with 2-piece Colt logo checkered hard rubber grips. Dovetailed blade front sight appears to be a period replacement. Assembly # "739" is present on the frame and loading gate. Cyl. does not match. CONDITION: metal components retain fair to good amounts of their original factory nickel-plated finish, exhibiting large areas that have been cleaned and are in-the-white, with scattered areas of pitting, light surface oxidation, flaking, and age-related discoloration overall. Nitre-blued components retain traces of their original finish. Bore is bright, exhibiting scattered areas of dark pitting while retaining strong rifling throughout. Action occasionally freezes on half-cock but otherwise functions appropriately when cycled by hand. Grips exhibit scattered superficial handling marks and smoothing but otherwise remain sturdy and serviceable. (01-25842/MLW). ANTIQUE. $800-1,200.
