STAR. 35" overall, 30.25" unstopped fuller blade, long 1.5” ricasso. This pattern Confederate staff was probably first made by Boyle & Gamble of Richmond, VA. CS & Star in a wreath w/ tobacco leaf & laurel decoration. Other makers who copied this unique Confederate pattern include Douglas of Columbia, SC & Froelich of NC, but this is one variant that is unknown as to manufacturer. Distinctive features of this particular unknown maker include smaller block letter “CS”, long ricasso. Long armed starfish-like star, & plain smooth unadorned pommel cap. CONDITION: good to very good overall, gray blade, carved wood grip missing leather & wire wrap except for fragments protected under pommel cap, wood has hand worn patina, 2 long age cracks, brass has smooth olive brass patina. Hilt loose due to missing protective washer. (02-19118/JS). $3,000-4,000.
